Dear Van,

I believe this country needs more leaders like you. I do know that my hometown in Danville, VA truly does! I'm not sure if you're aware of this little tidbit of history, but Danville is considered the last capital of the Confederacy. Since our City Council voted 7-2 two years ago to remove the Confederate flag from the grounds in front of the Southern Mansion turned museum on city property, a group called The Virginia Flaggers based out of Richmond, VA have erected more than two dozen Confederate flags in and around Danville, and throughout this state. The VA Flaggers mostly post these flags beside major Virginia thoroughfares such as Route 29N to a toll road leading out to the Chesapeake. This group receives permission from private property owners to post these flags for as little as $1 per year. It's ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE to live in a place with such deeply rooted racism! All the while, these racist beings claim, "It's our heritage! They can't make us erase our proud past!" Van, my heart aches everytime I see another one of their racist flags raised in and around my town. How can I teach my 11 yr old beautiful, innocent, and loving son that this is a symbol of hurt and pain for so many people, when he sees them flying out of the car window everyday all around this town?? Sincerely, Patricia A in VA
